Recognition for the ODYSSEY/ iliad

2016-17

Quill and Scroll Honor Society


The 2015-16 Clarke Central Odyssey Newsmagazine was awarded Superior Evaluations for Overall Coverage, Visuals and Writing/Editing from the Quill and Scroll Honor Society, thus earning a Henry Gallup Award- top recognition.  This is the eighth time the publication has received a Gallup Award from the Quill and Scroll Honor Society.

 

Columbia Scholastic Press Association

 

The 2015-16 Clarke Central Odyssey Newsmagazine was rated as a Gold Medalist in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Scholastic News Hybrid Print/Digital Critique for 2016.  The Odyssey received All-Columbian honors (top ranking) for Essentials, Visual and Verbal.  Overall, the magazine received 977/1000 points.

 

The 2015-16 Odyssey Newsmagazine/Odyssey Online was named a Hybrid News Crown Finalist from CSPA.

National Scholastic Press Association

 

The 2015-16 Odyssey Newsmagazine rated an All-American evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association.  The publication received Marks of Distinction for Coverage, Content, Visuals and Text.  All-American publications must earn 400-500 points and four or five Marks of Distinction.  The Odyssey accrued 450 points as a total score.

The 2015-16 iliad Literary-Art Magazine achieved a First Place Honor Rating.  The magazine achieved Marks of Distinction for Writing and Editing.  The magazine scored 459 points in its evaluation.

The Iliad Literary-Art Magazine for 2015-16 received an Excellent evaluation in the 2015-16 Literary Magazine competition of the Georgia Scholastic Press Association.

The 2014-15 Odyssey Newsmagazine rated an All-American evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association.  The publication received Marks of Distinction for Coverage/Content, Writing/Editing, Photos/Art/Graphics, and Layout.  All-American publications must earn 3200 or more points plus four or five Marks of Distinction.  The Odyssey accrued 3,840 points as a total score.

 

Chad Rhym was named a finalist in the Photo of the Year Competition – Environmental.

Ella Sams was named a finalist for the Cartooning Award – Editorial Cartoon.

The ODYSSEY Online received a Fifth Place in the Best of Show competition at the JEA/NSPA Fall Convention in Orlando, Florida on November 14.  The website received a First Class Honor rating for achieving 3400 or more points in evaluation.  

The 2015 Iliad Literary-Art Magazine received a First-Class evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association.  The publication received a Mark of Distinction for Content.  The Iliad rated 465 points as a total score.

 

Ethan Crane, Louise Platter and Ella Sams were named finalists in the Design of the Year Competition – Magazine Page/Spread. http://studentpressblogs.org/nspa/2015-design-of-the-year-finalists/  The group received Fifth Place on November 14.

The 2014 Iliad Literary and Art Magazine received the 2014 Program to Recognize Excellence Student Literary Magazines’ rank of Superior – Nominated for Highest Award.

 

National Scholastic Press Association

The Odyssey Online received an All American rating, the highest critique designation, from the National Scholastic Press Association and garnered Marks of Distinction for Coverage/Content, Interactivity/Community, Design/Navigation, and Rich Media on January 27, 2015.  All-American websites must receive 3,400 or more points plus four or five Marks of Distinction – the Odyssey Online received 3,700 points and achieved 4/5 Marks of distinction.

 The 2014-15 Odyssey was recognized as GSPA’s All Georgia Newsmagazine (highest honors); the publication has achieved All Georgia for the seventh time in eight years (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015).  The Odyssey received the General Excellence award for the 10th consecutive year, as well as a Superior rating. 

 

The Iliad Literary-Art Magazine for 2013-14 received the General Excellence award and was named All Georgia (highest honors).  

 

The Odyssey Online website received a Superior rating; likewise, it received the 2014-15 General Excellence News Website award and was rated All Georgia (highest honors) for the third-consecutive year.

The 2013 Iliad Literary and Art Magazine received the 2013 Program to Recognize Excellence Student Literary Magazines’ rank of Superior – Nominated for Highest Award.

National Scholastic Press Association


The 2012-13 Odyssey Newsmagazine rated an All-American evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association.  The publication received Marks of Distinction for Coverage/Content, Writing/Editing, Photos/Art/Graphics, and Layout.  All-American publications must score a minimum of 3,200 points.  The Odyssey accrued 4,115 points as a total score.

The 2012-13 Iliad Literary-Art Magazine received a First Class evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association.  The publication received Marks of Distinction for Writing/Editing, Layout, and Concept.  First Class publications must score a minimum of 450 points.  The Iliad rated 490 points as a total score.

The 2012-13 Clarke Central Odyssey Newsmagazine was rated as a Gold Medalist in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Scholastic News Hybrid Print/Digital Critique for 2013.  The Odyssey received All-Columbian honors (top ranking) for Essentials, Visual and Verbal.  Overall, the magazine received 970/1000 points.

 

The 2012-13 Odyssey Newsmagazine/Odyssey Online was named a Silver Crown from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association on March 21, 2014 at Columbia University in NYC – one of 90 schools so recognized out of a field of 1,236.  Both the print and online version were judged on writing/editing, design, content, concept, photography, art and graphics.

The 2012-2013 Clarke Central Iliad Literary-Art Magazine was rated as a Gold Medalist in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Student Magazine Critique for 2013.  The Iliad received 917/1000 points and one All-Columbian designation – Design.  The Iliad has received four consecutive Gold Medalist Awards.  

 

The 2012-13 Iliad Literary-Art Magazine was named a Gold Crown Award winner from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association on March 21, 2014 at Columbia University in NYC – one of 66 schools so recognized out of a field of 1,236.  The magazine was recognized for outstanding achievement in writing, editing, design and production of a superlative student publication through the cooperative efforts of students, faculty and administrators which epitomizes the high ideals from which CSPA has drawn its strength and inspiration.  The Gold Crown is CSPA’s highest award.

Quill and Scroll Honor Society


The magazine was awarded Superior Evaluations for Overall Coverage, Visuals and Writing/Editing from the Quill and Scroll Honor Society, thus earning a Henry Gallup Award- top recognition.  This is the fifth time the publication has received a Gallup Award from the Quill and Scroll Honor Society.

The 2013-14 Odyssey was recognized as All-Southern by the Southern Interscholastic Press Association for the ninth-consecutive year.  This is SIPA’s highest evaluation rating. These publications demonstrate excellence in all areas of scholastic journalism production. These publications effectively integrate writing, design and photography/art to give readers an excellent record of the school.  The Odyssey was rated All-Southern for Reader Services, Overall Visuals, Editing, Advertising, News, Opinions and Features.

The 2013-4 Odyssey Online site was recognized as All Southern.  These sites demonstrate excellence in all areas of scholastic journalism website production. This site effectively integrates

coverage and content, design and navigation, breaking news, interactivity and community

and rich media to give users an excellent record of the school and up-to-date information. The Odyssye Online received top evaluations in Coverage & Content, Breaking News, and Design & Navigation.  This is the third consecutive year the site has been so named.

The 2010-11 Clarke Central Odyssey Newsmagazine was rated as a Gold Medalist in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Newspaper Critique for 2011.  The Odyssey received All-Columbian honors (top ranking) for Essentials and Verbal.  Overall, the magazine received 934/1000 points.

The 2010-2011 Clarke Central Iliad Literary-Art Magazine was rated as a Gold Medalist in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Student Magazine Critique for 2011.  The Iliad received 937/1000 points and one All-Columbian designation.

The 2011 Iliad was as recognized as All-Southern by the Southern Interscholastic Press Association for fifth time in seven years. This is SIPA’s highest evaluation rating. These publications demonstrate excellence in all areas of scholastic journalism production. These publications effectively integrate writing, design and photography/art to give readers an excellent record of the school.  The Iliad received top evaluations in Reader Services, Design, Artwork/Photography, Special Touches and Non-Fiction.  

The Iliad went on to be named the Albert T. Scroggins Award winner for overall excellence at SIPA’s Courage To Connect Convention in Columbia, SC on March 4, 2012.

Columbia Scholastic Press Association


The 2009-10 Clarke Central Odyssey Newsmagazine was rated as a Gold Medalist in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Newspaper Critique for 2010.  The Odyssey received All-Columbian honors (top ranking) for Coverage, Graphic Presentation, Business Operations and missed All-Columbian honors in Writing and Editing by 4 points (376/400).  Overall, the magazine received 955/1000 points.

This year 1,434 magazines, newspapers, yearbooks and online publications of the current CSPA members were eligible to enter the Crown Awards. Judging for printed publications took place at Columbia University from December 11-13, 2010 by the Board of Crown Judges. Publications were judged on writing/editing, design, content, concept, photography, art and graphics.  The 2010 Odyssey was ranked as Silver Crown winner on March 18, 2011.

The Georgia Scholastic Press Association Awards Banquet was full of pleasant surprises this year.

    The 2008-9 Odyssey received GSPA’s General Excellence award for the fourth consecutive year and was recognized as Best Newsmagazine in the State by the GSPA for the second consecutive year–a first in the state within the last five years. As a staff, the Odyssey won Best Photojournalism in Georgia, Best Features Coverage in Georgia and Best Sports Coverage in Georgia. The iliad literary-art magazine also received the General Excellence award and a Superior rating from GSPA. 
In one of the most exciting moments of the afternoon, GSPA honored Superintendent James Simms at the 2009 Administrator of the Year. The Odyssey leadership team nominated Simms for this award based on his dedication to and support of the program.
Individual members of both the Odyssey and Iliad staffs also received a number of awards for their hard work.

National Scholastic Press Association


The ODYSSEY was awarded 298 out of a possible 300 points from NSPA’s evaluation resulting in an All-American rating. The magazine received Marks of Distinction in Coverage and content, Writing and Editing, Layout and Design, and Leadership.

“The depth of your coverage is amazing. From the front cover to the final page, the publication informs, entertains (and) directs its readers in many ways,” said NSPA judge Ann Suissee.

Columbia Scholastic Press Association


The ODYSSEY received 925 of a possible 1000 points, which resulted in Gold Medalist recognition and All-Columbian honors in Writing and editing, as well as in Business Operations.

Quill and Scroll Honor Society


The magazine was awarded 907 out of a possible 1,000 points from the Quill and Scroll Honor Society, thus earning an International First Place Award-Superior Achievement recognition.

Georgia Scholastic Press Association


The 2006-7 ODYSSEY Newsmagazine received a ranking of General Excellence from the Georgia Scholastic Press Association for the third straight year.

The magazine also received the “Best Features Coverage” award for the third straight year from GSPA.

The ODYSSEY Newsmagazine received three Marks of Distinction from NSPA for Coverage and Content, Writing and Editing, and Leadership. Overall, the magazine was rated as First Class – receiving 284 of a possible 300 points in the national competition.

Quill and Scroll Honor Society


The ODYSSEY received an International First Place AwardSuperior Achievement from the Quill and Scroll Media Evaluation competition. Receiving 917 points of a possible 1,000, the magazine missed consideration for the Gallup Award by eight points.

Southern Interscholastic Press Association


The ODYSSEY received an All-Southern rating and was named Best Newspaper in Georgia from the Southern Interscholastic press Association.
